A long way to go, but a great time to be up-trending. And the conference and the country are taking notice.

University of Montana Sports Information Director Eric Taber tells us that today (Monday), an impressive defensive performance and a pressure-packed perfect day of field goal kicking have earned two Montana Grizzly football team members Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honors. And the team has been named the Stats Perform FedEx Ground Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) National Team of the Week.

OUT-STEIN-DING WIN

The honors come on the heels of defeating the then-third-ranked Idaho Vandals in Moscow over the weekend by a score of 23-21, to bring the Little Brown Stein traditional traveling trophy back to Missoula. Footnote: here the stein will stay until at least 2025, as the Griz and Vandals won't meet again until September of that year, when the Vandals pay a return visit to Missoula.

Some talented dudes have come to us from small towns across Montana. The Big Sky Conference announced this morning that junior safety Ryder Meyer earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, and freshman kicker Grant Glasgow was named Special Teams Player of the Week.

Ryder was the team leader in tackles on a Grizzly defense that came up with three turnovers and held the powerful Idaho running to just 58 yards. The junior from Fairfield, Montana, had a team-high eight total tackles, combining on one tackle for a loss. He also came up with a huge interception in the end zone on a tipped pass from linebacker Riley Wilson to keep the Vandals from scoring early in the second half.

While his first season with the Griz has had some ups and downs, it was all up and through the uprights for Montana's freshmen kicker Grant Glasgow from Lawrence, Kansas. He had a perfect day, with three clutch filed goals, all coming from over 40 yards away.

BIG JUMPS IN THE RANKINGS

This week, the Griz climb to No. 6 nationally in the FCS Coaches Poll, and to No. 9 in the FCS Media Poll. With all the feel-good momentum building, the team would probably love to get out on the field again right away. But it is Montana's bye week, with their next game at home against Northern Colorado on October 28.

Enjoy the break and all the well-earned accolades, guys!
