Montana is well known for hunting, fishing and beautiful scenery, but I'd say the Treasure State is underrated as a place for skiing and snowboarding. Some people have the misperception that Montana is all flat— odd, considering that Montana shares several letters with the word "mountain," you'd think that would be enough to tip them off. Here's a list of ski resorts in Montana, listed by county:

Beaverhead County - Maverick Mountain

Definitely not the most famous ski resort in Montana, which is a good thing if you're looking for fresh powder. If you want to stay the night, Elkhorn Hot Springs is an option for lodging.

Carbon County - Red Lodge Mountain

This place is also likely to not be the most crowded mountain, so ski freely. They also do golf, weddings and events, according to their website.

Flathead County - Blacktail Mountain Ski Area and Whitefish Mountain Resort

A one day lift ticket costs $55 at Blacktail Mountain Ski Area and at Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort it costs $94, but the latter seems fancier so which one is better depends on what you're looking for. Check out a video of Whitefish Mountain Resort below:

Gallatin County - Bridger Bowl Ski Area

According to their website "Bridger Bowl’s Ridge Terrain presents some of the most challenging skiing and riding within any ski area boundary. Numerous steep chutes, rock cliffs, and snow fields which may end in cliffs with no hazard markings, no grooming and no marked trails" which sounds like a challenge to me.

Granite County - Discovery Ski Area

Their mountain features 3 faces which each have terrain that require different skill levels. They also have a bike park if you're looking for somewhere to ride around in the summer.

Hill County - Bear Paw Ski Bowl

South of Havre, this is one of the more remote ski resorts on this list. Kids 8 and under ski for free with an adult according to their Facebook page, I'm not sure how much skiing kids can do when they're that young so I'm only guessing that was worth mentioning.

Lincoln County - Turner Mountain Ski Area

Apparently you can rent the entire mountain according to their website, it never occurred to me renting a mountain could even be a thing.

Madison County - Big Sky Resort and Yellowstone Club

Yellowstone Ski Club isn't open to the public, in other words it's for members only according to their website. Luckily for Madison County Big Sky Resort is open to the public, and their website's tagline is "Biggest Skiing in America," and I like the sound of that

Meagher County - Showdown Ski Area

Ski resort complete with mountain cams, check it out on their website if you're curious.

Missoula County - Montana Snowbowl

Missoula's ski resort, and Missoulians can even shuttle there according to their website.

Ravalli County - Lost Trail Powder Mountain

Well I found the trail, so I'm not sure what's so "lost" about it. Here's their website for more info.

Silver Bow County - Great Divide Montana

Though it's called the great divide, it actually looks like a great place to get together. See for yourself on their website.

Teton County - Teton Pass Ski Area

Another one of the more remote locations up north, but who needs crowds on a fresh powder day?
