Montana Golfers To Hack Away For MT Special Olympics
Since 1984, the Hackers Golf Tournament has been the primary fundraiser for the Bitterroot Winter Special Olympics. The tradition will continue this year on September 11th, with plenty of fun for all who want to participate.
Playing host this year will be Hamilton Golf Club, a familiar location for the tournament as they've been hosting Hackers every year this century. Hamilton's fun yet challenging course in Ravalli County provides a wonderful backdrop to this annual event.
The Bitterroot Special Olympics uses the tournament as their primary fundraiser. Spokesman Randy Hodgson spoke with Townsquare Media Missoula on the impact the tournament has on the 2023 Special Olympics:
This is our major & only fundraiser for the Bitterroot Winter Special Olympics. We have actual timed events: cross country, we have a novice downhill [skiing] we have an advanced downhill, an inner tube hill, and then we have horse-drawn sleigh & inner tube rides.
ON THE NUMBER OF ATHLETES: Around 130 - 150, depending on the year.
Hodgson also pleaded for volunteers to help with not just the golf tournament, but with the upcoming Special Olympics, to take place the first week of March 2023:
Whether it's the Hackers or the Bitterroot Winter Special Games, they're very rewarding. We're always looking for lots of volunteers. You don't have to be a skier or a golfer to help with registrations, with helping to get skis put on.
We've had great community support over the last many decades, and hopefully it will continue.
