Missoula Women Invited to Celebrate 19th Amendment

The 19th amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America states "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." Missoula will celebrate 100 years of women's right to vote, and the badass women who made it possible.

Plan to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment with other women in Missoula on Saturday, October 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Election Office at 140 North Russell Street (near Pink Grizzly, across from Home Resource.) Join in honoring the women who fought for our rights and all those who have safeguarded them over the years, including the memory of Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The Jeannette Rankin Peace Center and the League of Women voters are asking you to wear white in honor of the suffragettes, and maybe a little yellow and purple trim. 

Purple, white, and gold were the colors of the American suffrage movement. According to the Suffragettes of 1913, purple is the color of loyalty, white represents purity, and gold is the color of light and life, like a torch. When you drop off your ballot in person on October 24th, you can put it in the box located inside, or use the drive by box outside. They do ask that you wear a mask and keep the safe 6 foot distance from other humans.

The ladies would love to have women safely lining Russell Street for the duration of those 4 hours so if you would like to sign up for a shift, hit 'em up at peace@jrpc.org. I signed up, come kick it with us! Organizers want to remind you not to bring or wear any partisan political signs or buttons, etc. These are not allowed on election property, and we want this to be a celebration of our progress rather than a continuation of political divisions. There will be suffrage centennial buttons for the first 150 women, information about the Equal Rights Amendment and more. Our votes could not be more important this year. So before you mail that ballot in, plan to be part of this visual celebration of the impact women make when they vote.
