Frenchtown Fire and Missoula Rural Fire are seeking resident volunteers to learn the skills necessary to become career firefighters.

Firefighter Libby Hooper said the departments are raising awareness about the resident program that began back in the 1990's.

"The program is geared toward to 18 to 25 year-old age range," Hooper said. "They come and live in one of the fire stations on a rotating shift schedule on evenings and weekends, and they respond and work right beside career and professional firefighters. It's designed for people who are interested in a career in firefighting, and is a really good way to get some good qualifications and certifications."

Hooper said the resident program lasts for two years.

"They come in with no experience whatsoever, and by the time they leave they are like a fully functional firefighter," she said. "We have an event from May 18th to the 21st in the evenings to showcase all the neat things you get to do in this line of work.It is an application process and it can be very competitive, because we want to get really good people to serve the community."

Resident applicants will meet each night at 5:30 p.m. outside Osprey Field and will be bused to various locations for an introduction to the program. Get more details here.
