I can see how it would be easy to get duped by scammers after I received a phony call the other week. They weren't after money, but instead tried to get access to my computer after stating they were with my internet provider. They claimed to be offering reimbursement for previous months due to COVID-19 being a hardship for so many. They were pretty believable, knew what they were talking about, and had an answer for everything I threw at them.......although, maybe not the most believable answer at times.

The Missoula Police Department has issued a warning about scam calls that are using phone numbers connected to the MPD. Victims are receiving calls and being told that either a warrant is out for their arrest or they need to update their personal information. The caller provides a number that victims can call to obtain more information. When someone calls the number they're usually asked to purchase a gift card so that they can make a payment. Being asked to make any sort of purchase that would then be used to make a payment is always a MAJOR RED FLAG!

As a reminder, The Missoula Police Department does not make phone calls of this nature. MPD reminds you to never give out personal information over the phone. They also ask that you report any incident where you have been the victim of a scam.

With tax refunds, stimulus checks, and people being vulnerable from the uncertainty of COVID-19, scammers have plenty of ways to prey on victims right now. If something sounds phony or too good to be true - it probably is.
