When I was in high school, we would have elections for student body president. And when we voted, we had the option of writing in our own choices instead of voting for anybody actually running. Which meant you had a lot of teenagers writing in "BUTTS" or "BART SIMPSON" or probably some words that I'm not allowed to type here. The write-in candidate never won, so what was the point?

Well, guess what? Last night in Montana, one of our elections ended with a write-in candidate winning! Crazy, right? In the Madison County sheriff race, undersheriff Phil Fortner got more votes as a write-in candidate than incumbent Roger Thompson.

Fortner ran after allegations came to light regarding Thompson's misconduct in office, for which he plead not guilty last month.
