One thing we are hearing a lot from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks about this year is  the abundance of bear sightings.

And while every person out in the woods should always be "bear aware," it seems like the reported confrontations this year are above normal. A Montana hunter just experienced that first-hand while attempting to retrieve harvested game.

Montana FWP tells us that a couple of days ago, Gallatin County 911 received a call from a local hunter who had been attacked by a bear. The 69-year-old man figures that he had  gone too close to a kill site near Flattop Mountain where a friend had recently harvested an animal a couple days ago. A mama bear who was with her cubs attacked him, causing injuries to his shoulder and hip. Fortunately, Gallatin County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue in Big Sky, Big Sky Fire Department, Montana Highway Patrol and Yellowstone Club Security were able to drive close to the man and walk him out to awaiting ambulance, which transported him to the Big Sky Medical Center.

FWP just wants to remind you that bears more actively search for food in the fall and can be protective of their food sources. And when you add in a mother being protective of her young in the mix, it can be a risky situation. When hunting or hiking in bear country, always have some form of repellent easily accessible on you. Make sure your cell phone is fully charged in case you have an emergency and need to use it.
