You see lists in your scroll all the time about the best pizza in each state, most dog lovers in each state, most educated state, etc, so these lists are a dime a dozen. But this one caught my eye not only because it's complimentary to our state, but also because of the criteria the list is based on. On a Zippia map rating the states from 1 to 50, with 1 being most gross and 50 being least gross, Montana came in at #49. The only state less gross than us is Alaska.

How did they come up with the rankings? They are based on 5 things: air quality, how much of the state is used for landfills, flu rates, the percentage of residents searching for "mayo recipes" on Google, and how many residents wear Crocs. I didn't make this up, it's for real, and it's hilarious. Zippia explains, "Sorry Mayo lovers and Croc wearers. A line had to be drawn somewhere." I admit, I love me some mayo, but I would rather walk through glass on fire with bare feet than wear Crocs. I will also admit that I'm typing this while wearing argyle socks with Vans slides, so who am I to judge. I will tell you this, though, Montanans hate Crocs so much that there's even a Facebook group called "Montanans Against Crocs."

Rounding out the five least gross states are Nebraska, Idaho, and Maine. As for the grossest, it's Texas, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia made the number one spot. We may have let ourselves go a bit over the last year, but at least we're not one of the smelly Carolinas.
