At around 9:14 p.m. on Tuesday, a Missoula Police Department officer responded to a report of criminal mischief at the Poverello Center located in the 1100 block of West Broadway. Officers arrived and made contact with a male, identified as 64-year-old John Mulligan, who had reportedly been damaging windows with a rock at that location. Detective Lieutenant Eddie McLean explained what occurred.

“Upon arrival, officers ended up talking to Poverello staff who informed them Mulligan was told he could not stay at the Poverello and he became upset,” McLean said. “He threatened the occupants inside, picked up a rock, and broke the windows of the Poverello Center. He caused over $1,500 in damage, which is a felony. Mulligan was subsequently arrested and transported to the Missoula County Detention Facility.”

According to court documents, the employee at the Poverello Center said he had witnessed Mulligan causing the damage. He said Mulligan became very upset when he was advised he could not stay at the location. Mulligan blocked the door with his foot and told the employee if he entered he would, "kill everyone inside."

The employee was eventually able to get the door shut. Mulligan then sat down and started drinking a beer. A short time later, Mulligan picked up a rock and began banging it against the windows and door causing significant damage.

Mulligan is currently being charged with one count of felony criminal mischief and he appeared in Missoula Justice Court on Wednesday afternoon.
