We all know the old saying about death and taxes being the only things that are certain in life. I would go ahead and throw in a third item for the list. Let's go with death, taxes, and surprising announcements from Missoula businesses. It definitely seems like there's no shortage when it comes to business openings and closings that take us by surprise.

In the last few weeks alone we've had big news from a couple of places that have each been around for over 25 years. First, a longtime favorite restaurant announced that they were leaving the downtown area as El Cazador left its location on the corner of Higgins and Front. (But at least we still have the location on South Ave.) And just last week it was announced that KettleHouse Brewing was putting the taproom on Myrtle Street up for sale. (There's still hope that it could remain in the KettleHouse family with new owners.)

Another Missoula business announces its closure

If the outdoor life has you cruising around Missoula on two wheels or headed to the mountains to ski there's a good chance that you've done business with Open Road Bicycles and Nordic Equipment. Shopping for something new, needing service, or just browsing, they've been taking care of Missoula with bikes and skis for years. A message from Open Road on social media and their website says they'll be closing for good this summer, with an expected closure by late August.

John has decided to take an early retirement, and Ryan is looking for new challenges after logging over 20 years at the shop. It’s been a good run. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who came before us, Cary and Tom, followed by Len and Dan, and of course all our loyal customers over the years.

I'm not sure how much it factored into the final decision, but a previous post on their website talked about how the store was short-staffed with mechanics in their service department. They were advising anyone needing bike service to plan ahead as they were booking at least 2+ weeks out.

What's the plan between now and when they close in August?

With news of their closure, Open Road also provided a few details about the daily business as they wind things down. Right now things remain normal but they'll eventually move to walk-in service only. They plan to put their inventory on sale and have already started with discounts on certain products.

Open Road ended its closure announcement by thanking customers for their support over the years.
