On July 9, 2022, Missoula County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a residence in Lolo for a report of a physical disturbance. Dispatch relayed that two separate bystanders called the disturbance in. The first caller advised that a female was chasing a male with a broom. A second caller advised that a female was strangling a male and that both parties eventually entered the residence.

The deputies made contact with both parties, later identified as 35-year-old Scarlett James and John Doe. One deputy observed that Doe had red marks on his neck, face, and arms. Doe related that he and James were in a previous relationship.

He advised that earlier that day they had a verbal argument while driving. He indicated that she struck him several times while he was driving.

Once they arrived back at the residence, Doe reported that James exited the vehicle and grabbed a metal boot scraper. He indicated that she held the boot scraper above her head with both hands. She postured like she was going to take a baseball swing and motioned several times like she was going to strike him. James then went inside the residence and began to throw things around.

Doe advised that as he approached the front door, James came back outside. James grabbed a broom and began swinging it at him. He said he backed away and she chased him, taking multiple swings at him. She then threw the broom at his head, which he described as a javelin throw.

He noted that they both then went inside the residence. Once inside, Doe advised that James threw an open beer can at him. Doe was concerned that James would continue to throw things at him, so he attempted to leave.

James blocked him from leaving and started to strike him and scratch him. He explained that she struck him approximately 15 times. Ultimately, James was placed under arrest and transported to the Missoula County Detention Center.

James is currently being charged with two counts of felony partner or family member assault. It was discovered that she had two prior convictions for domestic violence-related assaults.
