Communications Director John Barnes with the Montana Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation issued the following statement on Monday regarding the weekend fatal officer involved shooting on Saturday:

At approximately 5:20 p.m. on November 7, officers with the Missoula Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding an in-progress partner or family member assault at the 2300 block of Sherwood Lane.

Officers attempted life-saving measures but he died of his wounds at the scene. The suspect is identified as Jesse James Kale Brown, age 34, of Missoula.

Upon entering the residence, officers encountered a male resident holding a knife where other family members were present. He refused multiple orders by police to drop the knife. An officer deployed a taser but it had no apparent effect on the suspect. The suspect reportedly attacked one of the officers, who then shot the assailant. Officers attempted life-saving measures but he died of his wounds at the scene. The suspect is identified as Jesse James Kale Brown, age 34, of Missoula.

By request of the Missoula Police Chief, the Montana Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating the incident. When the investigation is complete, DCI will give the case file to the Missoula County Attorney’s Office. Per state law, the county coroner and county attorney will schedule an inquest regarding the shooting.
