At around 8:00 p.m. Monday night, a body was recovered from Salmon Lake after authorities received a report of a submerged vehicle. According to the Missoula County Sheriff's Office, a vehicle was seen sinking into the northern portion of the lake around 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

A certified diver with the MCSO responded along with Seeley-Swan Search and Rescue. “The recovery took several hours with very cold temperatures. A big thank you to assisting agencies and the diver who helped in this very sad incident," said MCSO in a social media post.

Officials have released the name of a man who died after his vehicle sank into Salmon Lake in western Montana. Missoula County Sheriff and Coroner T.J. McDermott says 80-year-old Douglas K. Pewitt of Seeley Lake died Monday. Pewitt's death has been ruled an accidental drowning.
