Boy, Netflix wasn’t kidding around when CEO Reed Hastings suggested cancellations might become more ruthless. Fan-favorite Wachowski drama Sense8 has officially been shuttered after two seasons, reports confirm.

ShowPatrol first reported the news, though star Brian J. Smith previously nodded toward Sense8 fans needing to show public support to sway Netflix on a third season. Cast contracts had already been extended to continue negotiations, while reports placed Season 2 production at a whopping $9 million per episode.

Here’s the statement Netflix provided:

After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8 cluster is coming to an end. It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable.

Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world. We thank Lana, Lilly, Joe and Grant for their vision, and the entire cast and crew for their craftsmanship and commitment.

The news is certainly bitter shock to Sense8’s diverse fanbase, especially given the series’ embrace of LGBTQ visibility and perspective. Sense8 also offered one of the rare unique sci-fi concepts to truly take advantage of a global setting, filming in multiple countries throughout its run.

There’s always hope Netflix might offer at least some closure to the series down the line, but what other shocking cancellations lie in store?
