Gas prices have dropped significantly around the nation, but prices in Missoula haven’t budged. Patrick DeHaan is the head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy and he says Missoula’s average gas price is currently $2.93 a gallon.

“The national average is down seven cents a gallon in the last week,” DeHaan said. “The statewide average in Montana is down about 3.5 cents a gallon in the last week and sits at about $2.87. Oil prices remain $12 a barrel below their April level. That is largely the culprit for the decline in prices as well as the end of refinery maintenance season and the transition to summer gasoline, which is done as well.”

Missoula remains a few weeks behind the national average, but DeHaan says motorist should except to see a price decrease in no time.

“There is a lag,” DeHaan said. “Prices are starting to gather that downward momentum in Montana. I do expect that decreases in the state will become more noticeable in the weeks ahead. For now, Montana is where the national average was a week ago. There is a slow decrease, but things will pick up speed.”

According to DeHaan, we're likely to see more good news at the pump than bad for the foreseeable future.
