It's probably not much of a surprise to hear that travel numbers are down as we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. I guess it makes sense that projections show Memorial Day weekend travel might hit a record low. But, as this KPAX story states, travel is so light that AAA isn't even giving their Memorial Day travel forecast for the first time in 20 years. That kind of makes you realize how much things have been affected.

If I think about it on a personal level - it does seem like everybody is laying low for the upcoming holiday weekend. I'm staying home, friends have cancelled travel and vacation plans, and my sister had to bail on her plans to come to town for the long weekend and the now canceled Brandi Carlile show at the KettleHouse Amphitheater.

Despite the dismal travel numbers, a bit of good news from that same KPAX story is that camping seems to be something people are eager to get out and do with restrictions being lifted around the country. Kampgrounds of America (KOA) are even showing promising numbers when it comes to booking their sites. I know, some will say you can't call it camping if you're hanging out and sleeping at a KOA......but, that's an argument for another day.

KOA says business is down 30% and they've had over 160,000 cancellations when you combine the numbers from the USA and Canada. It doesn't help that camping isn't currently allowed in 10 states. But, people seem anxious to return to travel and outdoor recreation - and KOA has seen their numbers increase recently. Bookings are actually just now starting to outnumber the cancellations on a weekly basis.

How do you feel about starting to travel as the restrictions continue to be lifted from COVID-19? As long as there's plenty of room, I think I'm alright with camping. It's just the social distancing from the s'mores that I might have a problem with.
