Golden Globe Winner Lily Gladstone Discusses Montana Origin

Just a few months removed from her Golden Globe Award for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone is showing love to her home state of Montana.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gladstone was asked about director Kelly Reichardt's calm, stoic approach to some of her roles and movies. Gladstone had worked with Reichardt in the past on films like First Cow and Certain Women Gladstone said Reichardt refers to it as "the Montana Still."

Gladstone was then asked if that was an apt description of Montana. Gladstone agreed Montana has a "stillness" to it.

As a Montanan, a significant chunk of your life growing up is spent in a car, traveling. People say it's a small town with really long streets. We would go to Kalispell every weekend so we could stock up at Costco, visit some family, and I could take ballet lessons. And that was a round trip, 180 miles. - Gladstone to Vanity Fair

Gladstone went on to make a Montana-to-Hollywood acting connection even.

"I think when you grow up in an environment like that, you're in this state of observation constantly. I also like giving the audience enough space to fill it in for themselves, instead of being so demonstrative and spelling things out," said Gladstone.

I love the "small town with really long streets" description of Montana. That comparison hasn't crossed my mind but I'd say it's spot on.
