Drunk Driver Does Doughnuts and Crashes Into a Snowbank in Missoula

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On January 27, 2024, a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper was dispatched to a call for an intoxicated male being aggressive toward others at a bonfire near Big Flat Road and South Side Road in Missoula County. The trooper received information that the male got into a green Subaru Outback, began doing doughnuts, went down a hill, and crashed.  

According to court documents, the male was able to drive away from the crash scene, drove in the tree line, and struck a tree. The male then drove out onto Big Flat Road and crashed into a snowbank. The male exited the vehicle and tried to hide in the woods before being located by law enforcement.  

The male was identified as 20-year-old Travis McCann. The trooper was advised that McCann was the male driver of the Subaru. The trooper began the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. McCann indicated six out of six clues of impairment on the HGN, seven out of eight clues of impairment on the Walk and Turn Test, and refused to conduct the One Leg Stand. 

McCann provided a preliminary breath sample that was .268 BrAC. Court documents indicate McCann has three prior convictions for DUI: (1) a conviction for BAC over .08 from Missoula Municipal Court, date of arrest January 29, 2021; (2) a conviction for BAC over .08 from Missoula Municipal Court, date of arrest June 30, 2021; and (3) a conviction for DUI 3rd out of Missoula County Justice Court, sentenced in September of 2023. 

McCann is currently being charged with felony DUI. On January 29, 2024, McCann made his initial appearance in Missoula Justice Court and his bond was set at $20,000.
