A thread on the Movies Reddit page is holding an ongoing discussion on the "Favorite Movie by State." Users on the social media site are voting for the best movies SET in each state. That doesn't mean where the movies were FILMED, or else most would be in California or Georgia. It means where the stories in these movies were SET.
Montana's winner was...
A River Runs Through It
The 1992 fly fishing movie was voted the most popular movie set in the Treasure State. Travel to Missoula, Montana to stand in a river with Brad Pitt, Craig Sheffer and Tom Skerritt (directed by Robert Redford.)
HOT TAKE INBOUND
I don't think A River Runs Through It is even close to the best movie set in Montana. It's a fine movie with a 7.2/10 on IMDB, but it should have been Denis Villeneuve's Arrival (2016). Starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker, Arrival is phenomenal with a better score on IMDB of 7.9/10. It's a thinker that leaves you pondering how you're living life and what you're getting out of it.
