If any filmmakers are planning to make a dinosaur movie with an out-of-this world, sci-fi looking star, Montana may have found it for them!

It's astonishing what teams of paleontologists and others can gather from bones to re-imagine what creatures from millions and millions of years ago might have looked like. And a new discovery in Montana is creating a buzz.

The Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU) tells us that Montana has once again proven to be a Treasure State dinosaur trove, with a newly unearthed species that is generating excitement and intrigue. Experts say it's one of the strangest dinosaurs ever discovered, to the point where it is "challenging existing notions about prehistoric life."

MEET LOKICERATOPS RANGIFORMIS ("LOKI" FOR SHORT)

"Loki" (named after the Norse god Loki, who is often depicted wearing a horned helmet) sure new how to make an entrance. NHMU says new species of horned dinosaurs among the most ornate ever found, with its two huge, blade-like horns on the back of its frill.

The fossil was discovered in Montana’s Judith River Formation. It belongs to a previously unknown species that exhibits a striking combination of features. Experts believe this dinosaur lived approximately 76 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period, when a rich diversity of dinosaurs roamed Earth.

What sets Loki apart from many previously-found fossils is its peculiar anatomy, blending characteristics that seem almost otherworldly. NHMU says, "Its most notable traits include a unique combination of skeletal structures, which suggest it may have adapted to a highly specialized lifestyle."

Researchers are still analyzing the fossil to determine its behavior, diet, and ecological role. Montana's unique geological history has preserved a wealth of prehistoric remains, making it a hot spot for groundbreaking discoveries.

And the lovely Loki is the latest in the lineup.
