It’s Claire Underwood’s Turn in New ‘House of Cards’ Season 6 Teaser
Yesterday, the nation was greeted with a message from our commander-in-chief. No, not that one; Robin Wright’s POTUS.
Claire Underwood addressed the nation in a brief teaser for House of Cards Season 6 on the Fourth of July. It’s shorter than the last teaser – which showed a camera tracking through the White House to find President Claire sitting in the Oval Office – but it’s a nice self-aware nod to not only the show itself, but the behind-the-scenes controversy around Kevin Spacey‘s firing.
The new tease finds Wright’s character sitting atop a Lincoln Memorial-esque throne to wish not you, but her a Happy Independence Day, followed by the hashtag #MyTurn. Yes, those two words are a reference to Claire’s final line at the end of Season 5, and Claire is now independent from Frank Underwood, who resigned from the presidency to VP Claire at the end of last season. But Wright, and the rest of the House of Cards cast and crew, are also independent from Spacey, who was fired last fall. The actor wasn’t just accused of sexual assault by actor Anthony Rapp, among others, but multiple members of the Netflix series’ crew also came forward with stories about Spacey’s “predatory” behavior on set. This tease is clearly a nod to both the on and off screen abuser.
The sixth and final season of the series will be a shortened run of just eight episodes. Both Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear will appear in unknown roles, along with Versace: American Crime Story star Cody Fern. Netflix has yet to announce a premiere date for the final season, but it’s set to return sometime this fall.
