Starting this week, Christmas tree permits are for sale.

"We've got snow on the ground and everyone's getting that feeling for Christmas and we are offering, starting today, Christmas tree permits at our Forest Service, BLM, and vendors offices here in South Western Montana, they are five dollars," said  National Forest Service spokeswoman Leonna Roderick.

People in the Missoula area can get their permits out at Fort Missoula.

"They can go to the Lolo National Forest headquarters in building 24 at Fort Missoula," Roderick said. "You can cut trees on National forest land, except within in Wilderness areas. We recommend that people cut tress that are within 5 to 10 feet in height. Don't just cut off the top, that is wasteful."

There’s a special opportunity this year for families that have a 4th grader. Fourth graders receive an Every Kid in a Park pass that allows them into National Parks for free, the pass will also get them a free Christmas tree permit.
