Veterans Day was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. Veterans Day gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans. According to Susan Reneau, several events are being held right here in Missoula to honor our local veterans.

“American Legion Post 27 at 845 Ronan Street will host a breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.,” Reneau said. “The VFW Post 209 will host a breakfast at the same time and they are at 245 W. Main Street.”

At 11:00 a.m., Reneau says they are also having a ceremony at the World War I Doughboy Statue on the Missoula Courthouse lawn.

“The ceremony is going to be organized by American Legion Post 27,” Reneau said. “Several speakers will talk about the historical significance of that day. It is open to the public and we hope everyone will come.”

Reneau says veterans will be at local grocery stores collecting donations for poppies and giving away poppies, which is the symbol of World War I. VFW Post 209 will collect donations and distribute poppies. KGVO would like to thank all veterans for their service.
